At Freediving Amed, we encourage our students to explore and experience the incredible underwater world beyond Bali. Recently, some of our adventurous students embarked on a thrilling journey to Sumbawa to freedive with the majestic whale sharks in Saleh Bay. Here’s a detailed account of their unforgettable adventure. In the future, we plan to organize and facilitate trips for freedivers in our network.
Day One: Arrival in Sumbawa Besar
Our students began their journey by flying into Sumbawa Besar, the main city on the island of Sumbawa. Upon arrival, they were greeted with the island's warm hospitality and unique charm. From Sumbawa Besar, they embarked on a scenic two-hour drive to the Saleh Bay area, a renowned habitat for whale sharks.
Upon reaching Saleh Bay, the group settled into their accommodations for the night, eagerly anticipating the next day's adventure. The tranquil surroundings and the anticipation of swimming with whale sharks made for a restful evening.
Day Two: Diving with the Gentle Giants
The day started early, with our students heading to the local fishermen’s port at dawn. The air was filled with excitement and a sense of adventure as they boarded a boat that would take them to the deeper parts of Saleh Bay.
Encounter with Whale Sharks
By 6 AM, the first sighting of the magnificent whale sharks occurred. These gentle giants, known for their docile nature and impressive size, offered an awe-inspiring experience. Our students were able to dive alongside these incredible creatures, witnessing their graceful movements up close. The encounter was not only thrilling but also humbling, as they swam in harmony with the largest fish in the ocean.
Some of our students even donned mermaid tails for unique and enchanting underwater photos. These moments were beautifully captured by our talented photographer Saka Asa, known as @sakagilapasa on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/sakagilapasa/
Post-Dive Relaxation
After an exhilarating morning of freediving with whale sharks, the group returned to their hotel to rest and reflect on their extraordinary experience. The morning’s adventure had left them in awe, and the chance to relax and rejuvenate was much needed.
Evening in Sumbawa Besar
In the afternoon, around 3 PM, our students began their journey back to Sumbawa Besar. To conclude their adventure-filled day, they headed to Ai Lemak Beach to witness the breathtaking sunset. The serene beach offered the perfect setting to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Sumbawa. The sunset painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, providing a picturesque end to their unforgettable journey.
Reflections on the Adventure
This adventure to freedive with whale sharks in Sumbawa was a testament to the boundless opportunities for exploration and discovery within the world of freediving. Encounters with such majestic creatures reinforce the importance of marine conservation and the need to protect these gentle giants and their habitats.
